Evolution with a touch of Revolution

Greg Seale, managing director, of SSP Water & Play reflects on

Twelve Years of Continued Company Growth

Incorporated in 1999 as Sunsafe Play Systems, the world of SSP Water & Play has continually evolved over the last 12 years. With a need to meet the ever-increasing demands of an avaricious audience, managing director, Greg Seale, says it’s all about Innovation and Quality Manufacturing.

Formed originally from two landscape and play ground installation companies at the turn of the century, SSP rapidly developed into a solutions-based business. In 2000 the firm operated out of a humble outbuilding at the Bothy Bagshot Park. A dozen years on, SSP has double the amount of staff, numerous sub-contractors and occupies luxurious farm offices in the Odiham countryside. In 2011, a new manufacturing facility was purchased a few miles away in Bordon, Hampshire.

“Product development is the key,” says Greg, “We are always looking to be inventive and bring new, expansive ideas to the market. Children are more discerning than ever; if the park in the next town has play things that are fundamentally more enjoyable, the local one will be ignored and parents will face the obligatory drive down to ‘FunLand’ in order to satisfy their son or daughter’s needs.”

SSP’s range of products is now all-encompassing; it allows the business to offer a total package solution to customers around the UK and beyond. It is a genuine unique selling point when SSP says it is the only API member to offer combination parks, blending a comprehensive mixture of water, sand and adventure features to produce a fun, action-packed playspace that will amuse and stimulate children of all ages.

“The biggest development in the early days was the LEGOLAND project,” reflects Greg, “For the first few years we carried out a lot of work with local authorities and schools. To suddenly be approached by one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country was exciting and challenging.”

From that first venture in to theme park world, SSP never looked back. Major deals with other leisure parks such as Paultons Park and Flamingo Land followed, as well as significant redevelopments at Sywell Country Park and Weston-super-Mare. Indeed, such was the success at Paultons Park and Flamingo Land that the SSP team was invited back to carry out further work at the popular theme parks.

“It’s fantastic winning the tender for a big project,” says Greg, “But even more rewarding to be invited back, as it’s a seal of approval regarding our product range and a testimonial to our credibility and professionalism.”

The advent of Water Play has been the essential component for SSP’s success; the diversity of product offering that the company now showcases, comprises:

  • 38 Above Ground Features
  • 17 Cannons and Squirters
  • 23 In-ground Jets
  • 25 Off the Shelf Themed Features
  • 150+ FunForms, everything from small creatures to impactful desert islands
  • 13 Brand new EcoSplash features
  • 40 durable sound play instruments
  • Pre-built Plat Room Cabinets

“EcoSplash has been the real revolution in our business,” explains Greg, “Something that was just the seed of an idea two years ago is now a core component of what we do and offer to our customers. We already have Splash Pads at eight parks around the UK and with us now manufacturing them ourselves; I expect the number to grow significantly over the next twelve to eighteen months.”

Bespoke training programmes are now available to address maintenance and care issues – another sign of SSP’s commitment to customer care. So with revenues up fivefold in the last few years and expansion plans in to Eastern Europe very much on the radar, it certainly is exciting times for the company. Greg puts it down to old fashioned values with a forward-thinking ethos:

“We have great products with long guarantees, which offer clients security and reassurance. Plus we have highly experienced people that offer exceptional customer service by always delivering on our promise. We listen; we ponder, we create inspirational 3D designs and then produce something truly magical. The simplicity of the solution comes from our knowledge and understanding of the market supported by empathetic after care.”

SSP Stars at the OSCARS!

Ever since its formation in January 2011, the Osmastson Community Association of Residents (OSCAR) has been championing the cause to regenerate the now derelict Rolls Royce site in the Derbyshire town. The factory, production home of famous machines such as the Silver Ghost for nigh on one hundred years, will now play host to a different type of boys’ toys – and girls of course!

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c7/Osmaston_Rolls-Royce.jpg

An inclusive playspace is to be constructed following consultation with Osmaston residents, with funding assistance from Derby Homes. The “OSCAR Play Area” will serve the local community all year; it will also be free of charge and vandal resistant. SSP is delighted to be part of the project and will be installing a range of fantastic play equipment, all meeting EN1177 safety standards. SSP beat off stiff competition from specialist suppliers to win the tender contract following its well thought-out proposal, expertly marshalled by National Sales Manager Michelle Minns-Sykes.

Osmaston’s children can look forward to activities such as challenging their balance on some demanding trim trails, as well as experiencing the thrill of a dual-usage zip wire. SSP looks forward to showcasing a completed project gallery once installation is finalised.

“On Time. On Budget.” A promise not a statement of intent.

During the recent economic turmoil, customers in every industry have become more discerning and certainly more demanding. Reliability and deliverability on promise have become essential qualities in the customer service guide book. Falling short on value and delays on installation must be things of the dim and distant past. SSP are delighted that in the whole of 2011, every major project was delivered on time and on budget.

On Time.jpg

The installation process is as important as the design element and the actual choice of equipment.

“It’s part of our overall client pledge,” comments Operations Manager, Rupert Sowter, “Not only do we try and offer a broad spectrum of outstanding water play features at competitive, realistic prices, but we will always, without fail, go that extra mile to ensure that our customer needs are met.”

Historically, there have always been peak periods for project completion in the play industry and Rupert accepts that it’s unavoidable and simply of question of adequate planning and optimising the use of suppliers:

“Easter, Whitsun and Summer Holidays are typically the completion time requests from demanding attractions, schools and recreation areas. We allocate maximum resource to effect the right conclusion even in the busiest seasons.”

It's as eibe as that!

The entire SSP team are paying a flying visit to eibe Play, in Rottingen, Germany, at the start of 2012 to catch up on all the latest indoor and outdoor product developments planned for 2012 by the international play equipment specialists.

eibe headquarters in Bavaria, 3o kms south of Würzburg

SSP has been working in partnership with eibe for many years now, enabling the business to offer a comprehensive solution to attractions and parks across Europe.

Managing Director Greg Seale says the relationship is mutually beneficial and that the combined portfolio of the two businesses makes a real impact with potential buyers:

“eibe’s nature-inspired ibondo “unique” range will complement the sustainable ethos of SSP in continuing to provide natural play settings, utilising local resources and embracing environmental elements. I’m sure we will witness even more wooden themed playspaces built around our Water Play features in the year ahead.”

Turtle drum competition winner

SSP Water & Play ran a competition at this year’s highly successful Playfair exhibition held at Stoneleigh Park during the summer. First prize in the competition was a beautiful Turtle Drum, one of SSP’s ingenious and innovative ‘Soundplay’ range of outdoor musical instruments. Made up of three groups, Melodic Percussion, Animal Drums and Sound Sculptures. the equipment offers unique opportunities to develop skills as wide ranging as non-verbal communication, gross motor development, peer group and intergenerational interaction.

The Turtle Drum is a box drum sculpture with four pitches produced when the Ipe’ (Brazilian hardwood) tone-producing surface is struck with mallets - each painted animal is unique. The lucky winner was Tamsen Finch of Rufford Landscapes Limited who has decided to donate the drum to the infants' section of St Augustine Webster Catholic Primary School in Scunthorpe following a successful project constructing a maze and prayer garden for them.

Tamsen commented “We decided that the drum should be enjoyed by as many children as possible for many years to come. The school was delighted to receive it and it now sits in their infant playground.”
